Ageing
What Causes Ageing?
We all know what ageing is but what is the mechanism that causes ageing. Ageing is caused by the slowing down in the division of cells and cell replacement that takes place from the time we are born – with ageing a gradual decline of the bodies systems begins, hair turns grey, skin wrinkles, joints and muscles lose flexibility memory declines etc. Some of this decline is normal and inevitable however many researchers believe that unstable oxygen molecules called free radicals can accelerate the ageing process, making some people age quicker than others
Did You Know?
Although the appetite decreases as you get older the bodies demand for vitamins & minerals actually increases and therefore you need a greater amount to keep at optimum health levels
How can you slow down ageing?
Avoid Free Radicals – excessive alcohol consumption, cigarette smoke, pollution, radiation, x rays from the sun – all have a damaging and ageing effect on the body
Enhance the bodies own antioxidant defences – Manufactured by the cells, antioxidants can also be obtained through the diet, antioxidants and powerful weapons against free radicals and help to remove them
How can Supplements Help?
Vitamin C – Is an antioxidant that that works within the watery interiors of the cells
Vitamin E – is an antioxidant that fights free radicals, it protects the fatty membranes that surround the cells. It also reduces the risk of some add related diseases – heart disease, some forms of cancer & possible Alzheimer’s
Folic Acid – a B vitamin maintains red blood cells and promotes the healthy functioning of nerves. It protects the heart & is assisted by vitamin B12 which fosters healthy brain function.
Vitamin B12 – Low levels of this nutrient can cause nerve damage and dementia. It is advisable to take a multivitamin and mineral formula rather than to take this vitamin alone as the elderly usually need more nutrients than younger people as the bodies’ ability to absorb them lessens.
Osteoporosis – to protect against this condition the supplements Calcium, Magnesium and vitamin D are recommended because multivitamin formulas do not usually provide adequate doses of these nutrients
Ginkgo Biloba – This herbal supplement enhances the flow of blood in the body and may help to improve age-related conditions such as dizziness, impotence and memory loss.
